And if the wax is hard, dry and stuck, a clinic has suction and a\nbetter view than you do.\n\nWhy rinsing rather than a cotton bud\n\nA cotton bud takes some wax out and pushes the rest further in, which is the\nopposite of what you wanted. Ears also clear themselves most of the time, and\nthe people who have the most trouble with wax are often the ones cleaning their\nears the most.\n\nRinsing works with the ear rather than against it: warm water softens, gravity\nand a gentle flow do the rest, and nothing goes deep into the canal.\n\nWarm water, not hot and not cold\n\nWater that is much warmer or cooler than body temperature can make you dizzy\nfor a moment. It passes, but it is unpleasant and avoidable. Aim for body\ntemperature and test it before it goes anywhere near your ear.",
